The Resin Beast Painting Competition will be back in person! 

This year, the Creature Caster team will finally be back at Adepticon with our Resin Beast competition in full swing! We’re looking forward to seeing you all in person!

The past two years of online Resin Beast were an enjoyable experience that allowed for people all around the world to participate. We’re keeping that ball rolling with weekly random draws, so we can see everyone’s Creature Caster creations (we know travel and conventions aren’t an option for everyone, just yet). Furthermore, there will be an online ‘judged” portion.

Categories and Prizes (In-Person):

Judged models have very specific criteria, so be sure to read all of the details under Entry Rules. You may submit 1 entry into each size category, but you cannot submit more than 1 entry per size category. We are using a different approach this year – rather than a standard 1st-2nd-3rd placement, we’ll have placements based on painting style to encourage a diversity of painting styles! (Read more on these placements under the expanded Entry Rules, below.)

Large Model

To be judged by seasoned artists, using the Resin Beast judging process. Must be submitted at the Creature Caster booth at Adepticon (March 23rd-27th).

As with last year, we are returning with an Online Edition of the Resin Beast. The casual portion of the online contest will be conducted entirely through Instagram, and judged models will require a digital submission.

Casual Entrants

Test your skills and share your work with the community without the pressure of formal judging! Anyone wishing to participate can post their Ceature Caster projects on Instagram (WIP are encouraged, too!), and will be entered into a weekly prize draw.

Entry Rules

General Rules

  • Only one official entrant per entry. If the work was done as a collaboration, only one of the collaborators may enter into the contest and will be given sole consideration when awarding prizes and credit for the entry.
  • The paint job must be your own work. You may not enter someone else’s creation under your own name.
  • Creature Caster Models ONLY (including discontinued models).
  • Conversions welcome, but the original model must be clearly identifiable.
  • NO scratch-built models. Exception: base elements or diorama components can be scratch-built, provided the main focus of the entry is a Creature Caster model.
    • 3rd party bases/elements used for basing are allowed, provided they are not the focus of the entry.

Pick Your Painting Poison

TRADITIONAL
Models that fall under this category are painted using the traditional method that painters have most commonly used for miniature painting competitions over the years. Models under this category will be painted to the highest traditional standards, with excellent blends, highlights, and attention to detail. 

 

NON-TRADITIONAL
There will always be those who stray from the path most travelled and pave a road for themselves. This category is here to recognize the efforts of those who excel at non-traditional styles of painting: be it a look as simple as black and white or 2D comic book artwork, to something more complex and impressionistic in its execution. Models under this category should have something that makes them really stand out against the competition and capture the imagination of the judges.  

 

NARRATIVE
Theme and aesthetic are always something that draws a viewer into a piece. Models that are under this category should tell a story: whether it is a clever conversion, diorama, or even a model with a particular colour scheme and source lighting. Regardless of the style used, models under this category will convey a sense of emotion and tell a story.

Large Model

How to Submit an Entry In-Person:

  • All entries must be submitted, by you or by a representative, at the Creature Caster booth at Adepticon.

How to Submit an Entry Online:

  • All entries must be submitted via this google form by April 1st: Resin Beast 2022 Digital Edition
  • You must upload the following pictures of the model:
    • 2 front views.
    • 1 side view.
    • 1 back view. 
    • Do not upload more or less than 4 images.

Model Criteria (In-Person and Online):

  • The Canuckmera, Lords and Ladies, Queens and Kings, Dragons, Drakon, Elementals, and any other Creature Caster models of the same approximate size are acceptable entries for the Large Model Category.
  • Busts will not be accepted.
  • Conversions are welcome and encouraged, but remember that you will be judged on your technical expertise in assembling models.
  • Single models only.
  • There are no size restrictions on basing, but a base that overly distracts from the model itself could lose points.

Photography Criteria (Online):

  • Preferred: white/black backgrounds or lightly-textured backgrounds. We recommend NOT using competing/busy backgrounds so we can really see the model and your paint job!
  • This is not a photo-taking contest, so please limit use of: effects, coloured lights, photoshopping, etc. 

All Entrants Agree to the Following: 

  • Creature Caster can freely post, or share the images that the entrants have submitted. Such images shall henceforth be the property of Creature Caster and the entrants waive all moral rights in regards to these images. Creature Caster may use the images as they see fit without payment to the entrant.

Small Model

How to Submit An Entry:

  • Post your entries to Instagram and tag your Creature Caster model with #resinbeast2022 and #creaturecaster
  • All entries to-date are eligible to be drawn in each draw, so the sooner you submit your entry the more chances you have to win.
  • Making more than 1 post of your entry will not increase the chances of winning. 
  • A single entrant cannot win more than one random draw. 

Model Criteria and Restrictions:

  • You cannot have entered the same model into a prior Resin Beast competition.
  • Entries can be of all skill levels. 
  • Entries that are only assembled or primed will not be included in draws. WIPs are acceptable, however we’d love to see as close to complete as possible.

Judging Process

All entries must be submitted at Adepticon (in person) or in the google sheet by April 1st (online). Online judging will take place from April 1st to April 15th. Winners will be announced on April 19th. 

Hall of Heroes (Judges Cut)

  1. Each judge will independently choose their top 5 entries for each style within the size category. All of these entries advance to the Hall of Heroes.
  2. Collaboratively the judges will choose 5 entries from each style of the Hall of Heroes to advance to Final Placement. If a unanimous decision cannot be reached, there will be a blind vote by the judges. Ties from this vote will be broken by the head judge.
  3. The 15 models that have advanced to Final Placement will be ranked and scored according to specific criteria outlined below.

Resin Beast Boss Battle (Final Placement) 

  1. Each judge will score independently and may not consult with any other person, or reveal their scores to any other person. 
  2. Each entry is judged on several different criteria.
  3. Each criteria has its own weighting on the final score.
  4. For each criteria the entries are ranked from 1-10, with 10 representing the highest rank. 
    1. Each criteria has its own ranking independent of the other categories. E.x. A model could rank a 10 on Artistic Quality but only 1 on Basing. 
    2. Models cannot be assigned the same rank within each criteria. E.x. No models can both score an 8 on Basing. 
  5. The criteria and weighting are as follows:
    1. General Appeal .15
      1. Roughly considered to be the “wow” factor
      2. How eye catching is the piece?
      3. Is it consistently appealing both at a distance and up close? 
      4. Discovery of detail. That is as the eye is drawn in, is there more to discover about the piece?
    2. Thematic Strength .1
      1. Is there a character or story being represented?
      2. Lighting used to tell a story
      3. Is there inherent meaning, or a message conveyed in the piece?
      4. Is the theme consistent and supported throughout?
    3. Technical Application .3
      1. Clean preparation and construction of the model
      2. Natural appearing conversion
      3. Skillful application of painting style
      4. Consistency of work throughout
    4. Artistic Strength .4
      1. Shapes, patterns, symmetry, or asymmetry applied meaningfully
      2. Use of color pallet
      3. Use of texture 
      4. Flow of the piece (does the piece guide the eye)
      5. Framing and presentation of piece
    5. Complexity .05
      1. The technical challenge of creating the piece. 
  6. Each Judge creates a Final Score by multiplying each ranking by its weighting, and adding the categories together. Their scorecard is submitted to the head judge. 
  7. Final Score is taken as an average of all the judges’ scores for each entry.
